Chateau Branaire Saint-Julien 1997

seintjulien

Tonight's Bordeaux Selection:

CHATEAU BRANAIRE DUCRU 1997, SAINT JULIEN AOC, BORDEAUX, FRANCE
Fourth Classified Growth in 1855. 70% CABERNET SAUVIGNON -22% MERLOT - 5% CABERNET FRANC - 3% PETIT VERDOT

A gorgeous wine! Our favorite of the Bordeaux so far.
I found this description from Wine & Co... not sure about the grilled coconut and Russian leather - then again, little do I know about wine lingo...

«The attractive building that the traveller sees across the road from Château Beychevelle, produces a wine which is as aesthetically pleasing as its architecture: simply superb. In the controversial 1997 vintage, the result was equally superb. Beautifully coloured, with smoky notes of grilled coconut on the nose combined with toasty aromas and Russian leather. Smooth on the palate, this is a finely crafted wine.»

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte

Lafitte

Tonights wine:
Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge 1999

50% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 15% cabernet franc

«Epices, violette, cassis, nez riche et prenant, bouche dense, tapissée de tanins moelleux. Vin tendre mais avec de la réserve.» (Fédération Nationale des Cavistes Indépendants)

«Le nez est un mélange de fruits rouges et noirs déjà fondus. L'attaque en bouche est à la fois tendre et puissante pour se développer sur un fruit noir exubérant jusqu'en finale avec de belles notes florales et épicées d'une grande longueur.»

Chateau Monbrison

mombrison

Tonights wine:
Château Monbrison 1998, Cru Burgeois, Margaux, rouge

Number two of the gifted Bordeaux bottles. Its a '98 bottle, slightly corked, but lovely berry taste still.

Grapes: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot

«Malgré une petite baisse au début des années 90, Monbrison a toujours été dans les meilleurs Cru Bourgeois du Médoc. De la densité, un bel équilibre, une touche palpitante de Cabernet et une finale tout en finesse.» (Vins-fins.com)

Chateau Berliquet

Berliquet

Château Monbrison 1998, Cru Burgeois, Margaux, rouge

First bottle in a series of fine Bordeaux wines generously donated to Bundlebit B&B :-)
A 2001 Chateau Berliquet (Saint Emilion Grand Cru) with a beautiful nose, is surprisingly smooth to drink. Nice!
Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc

What winesdirect.ie say about this wine:
Vanilla and blackcurrant abound on the nose. Opulant, rich, velvety and well balanced.
This is a very old cru that was already famous at the end of the eighteenth century. Well located on the top of St-Martin’s plateau, with the classic combination of the two grape varieties in the right proportions, the château takes advantage of the master skills of the wine-maker, Patrick Valette, who also exercises in Château La Prade.
